Bulldogs battle back but fall in a close one at Longwood, 62-57

01.05.2022 | Women's Basketball

FARMVILLE, Va. – Trailing by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team mounted a huge rally to get within one point in a thrilling contest at Longwood on Wednesday. Despite the stellar effort by the Bulldogs, Longwood held on for the 62-57 victory.

Four different Bulldogs finished the night in double figures. Kai Carter led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Abigail Wilson (13 points, eight rebounds) and Faith Adams (12 points, 4-for-6 from 3-point range) both set new season-high point totals. Nadiria Evans rounded out the scoring leaders for Asheville as she closed the night with 10 points.

Both teams struggled to get their respective offenses going in the first two quarters. Combined, the Lancers and Bulldogs scored 42 points in the first 20 minutes. Longwood outshot Asheville 34.6 to 22.6 percent in the first 20 minutes of action. However, the Bulldogs showed tenacity and grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the half to gain some extra possessions. Thanks to this fight, the two teams went to the locker room tied at 21.

Longwood suddenly started to find its offensive rhythm following the low-scoring first half in the third quarter. The Lancers kicked things off with a 6-2 run that led to a 13-2 spark to end the quarter and put the Bulldogs in a double-digit hole heading to the fourth quarter, 42-30.

As previously stated, Longwood kept the pressure on Asheville in the opening minutes of the fourth as it built its lead to as many as 17 points. Much like Longwood's offense did in the third, the Bulldogs started to click in a major way down the stretch. Asheville hit five 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes to fuel a 27-point quarter. The sudden burst of offense whittled the Longwood lead all the way down to one point, 58-57, with 46 seconds to go after the fourth made three from Adams. Unfortunately for Asheville, Longwood knocked down four clutch free throws to close out its third Big South win in as many tries, 62-57.

Asheville will return home to Kimmel Arena on Saturday as it welcomes in Hampton for another Big South matchup. Tip-off for that contest is set for 2 p.m., and it can be seen on ESPN+.
