ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team opens up Big South play on Saturday evening, making the trek to Hampton for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
Weathering the Storm
UNC Asheville was set to have its Big South home opener on Wednesday evening against High Point, but the match was postponed to October 26 due to the weather. After defeating The Citadel 1-0 on September 9, the Bulldogs enter Saturday with a record of 1-7-1, having dropped contests against Davidson and at Gardner-Webb. Courtney O'Malley and Bronwyn Luitwieler continue to trade minutes in net, totaling five and four starts apiece, respectively.
Scouting the Pirates
Hampton has played just five games so far in the Fall 2021 season, posting a record of 1-3-1, going 1-1-1 at home. The Pirates fared well in their Big South opener however, battling Presbyterian to a 0-0 draw. Hampton has scored eight goals in five games, with seven different goal scorers led by Zariah Ascue. Sydney Johnson has played the majority of the minutes in net, starting four games and collecting 21 saves.
Series History
The teams have met just twice in their history, with the Bulldogs winning 1-0 in both 2018 and 2019. The last time the sides met in Hampton in 2019, it was Gillian Oyos' goal in the 35th that proved to be the game winner.
