Women’s Soccer falls in conference opener 2-0

09.18.2021 | Women's Soccer

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Women's Soccer opened up Big South play at Gardner-Webb on Saturday evening, falling 2-0.

All in all, the teams were fairly even, but the Runnin' Bulldogs got two goals from Maddie Turlington that would be the difference. Despite outshooting Gardner-Webb 14-12, the Bulldogs could not find the back of the net as they drop to 1-7-1 overall.

"The result is a really tough one to take tonight," said head coach Andy McNab. "We dominated long stretches of the game - the bulk of possession - we just couldn't get the ball in the net. We'll move on to Wednesday and try to bring out a similar performance and energy level."

The Game at a Glance

  • Asheville totals 14 shots, eight on frame
  • Gardner-Webb gets two goals from Turlington
  • Courtney O'Malley picks up four saves

How it Happened
Gardner-Webb registered the first shot on goal in the 10th but O'Malley picked up her first save. In the 14th, Madison Carter worked free for the first shot for the Bulldogs. Anna Doane had a pair of chances and in the 22nd Alice Walker rung the post but the shot bounced wide. In the 33rd, it was the Runnin' Bulldogs who would break through in the 32nd when Turlington converted a long through ball to make the game 1-0 as the teams went into the break.

Turlington opened up the second with a shot before Kaiya Boyd pushed one high in the 50th.  After Carter fired another shot high, Gardner-Webb registered a pair of chances but the score remained 1-0. The two sides struggled to produce chances until the last 10 minutes when Taylor Gardner placed a shot on frame that was picked up by Katelyn Kellogg. In the 86th, Mackenna Stickler set up Turlington for the second goal of the contest as Gardner-Webb claimed the match 2-0.
