Men’s soccer comes up short against College of Charleston
09.15.2021 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N. C. – After playing four straight games on the road, the UNC Asheville Men's Soccer team returned to Greenwood on Wednesday night, falling to College of Charleston 5-3.
Although the Bulldogs registered a season-high 16 shots, College of Charleston matched them with 16 of their own. In the 78th minute, Colin Daughtry evened the match at 3-3, but the Cougars answered less than two minutes later, adding an insurance goal in the 90th.
"That wasn't the outcome we wanted, but I'm proud of our guys," said head coach Mick Giordano. "We had some calls and some unlucky breaks that didn't go our way, but we kept fighting until the end. We'll work on cleaning some things up and getting sharper before our next match."
The Game at a Glance
- Each team strikes twice in the first half
- Charleston, Asheville trade goals to open second, Cougars add two more
- Conor Behan nets second of the season, Daughtry & Myles Edmondson score first
- Grant Stidham collects five saves, Bulldogs total eight shots on frame
How it Happened
The Bulldogs would register the first shot of the game when Nate Evans broke free in the 10th. In the 19th, College of Charleston got its first chance, and after Stidham turned three shots away, Kane Ritchie scored the first goal of the night. In the 39th, Myles Edmondson collected a loose ball, dribbled in and curled one in with the outside of his left foot to knot the game up at 1-1.
The Cougars would catch a break in the following seconds, getting a penalty called that Jakob Kristensen converted for the score. In the closing minutes, Daughtry flicked a ball on to Izzy Garcia who played it on to a patient Behan who buried it to send the teams into the break tied 2-2.
The trend of trading goals continued, as Nick Burnz scored less than six minutes into the second. The Bulldogs battled back, registering a number of shots and corners until Garcia found Daughtry for the score. College of Charleston would respond quickly again, taking a 4-3 advantage with 10 minutes to play. Asheville produced four straight shots including a chance by Jake Kemhadjian that was on frame but saved. With the Bulldogs pressing, the Cougars worked their way into the box and added their fifth to take the game 5-3.
