Bulldogs drop a three-set decision on the road at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set decision on the road at Elon (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) Friday evening in a non-conference matchup.
Set 1 – The Phoenix jumped on the Bulldogs early in the opening stanza of Friday's match. Elon scored seven of the first eight points to force Asheville to take an early timeout to reset. The timeout seemed to do the trick as Asheville trimmed the deficit down to two points, 13-11. With the sudden switch in momentum, it was Elon's turn to burn a timeout. Much like it did for Asheville, Elon's called timeout worked wonders as coming out of it as the Phoenix rattled off eight straight points to rebuild their lead. This run from Elon proved too much for Asheville to overcome as it dropped the first frame, 25-16.
Set 2 – Elon's offense kept the pressure on Asheville as the two teams returned for the second set. Collectively, the Phoenix attacked at a .444 clip with 14 kills in the frame. However, Asheville was able to hang around thanks to four kills on eight attacks from Peyton McClinton and five service errors by Elon. Despite McClinton's efficiency offensively and the serving issues by Elon, the Phoenix were able to build a sizable lead before finishing off the second frame with a 25-15 victory to go up 2-0 in the contest.
Set 3 – During the third and final set of Friday's match, the difference proved to be a nice run for Elon early on. First, the Phoenix used a 5-0 spurt to change a one-point lead at 4-3 into a six-point advantage, 9-3. Elon grew its lead to as many as 11 points in the third before the Bulldogs trimmed the Phoenix's lead down to seven. Unfortunately, that's where the comeback stalled, and Elon finished off the three-set win, 25-16.
Next Up – Asheville will return to the court Saturday afternoon as it takes on North Carolina Central in a neutral site match at Elon. The first serve between the Eagles and Bulldogs is scheduled for 3 p.m.
