Bulldogs down Western Carolina in four sets for their first victory of the season

08.28.2021 | Women's Volleyball

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team notched its first win of the season Saturday as it downed rival Western Carolina in four sets (25-23, 14-25, 25-20, 25-15). With the victory, the Bulldogs' record moves to 1-1.

Set 1 – After the two teams exchanged the first few points of the opening set, the Bulldogs built a seven-point lead at 16-9. WCU, however, righted the ship and came back to tie the score at 22. With the set in the balance, Asheville got a pair of critical kills from Molly Hackett, and the duo of Hannah Spicer and Carley Modlin teamed up on a block to clinch the first set for the Bulldogs, 25-23.

Set 2 – Western Carolina bounced back with its best set of the match in the second. WCU used a combination of stellar offense (14 kills, .464 hitting percentage), success on the service line (three aces), and dominance on the block (five blocks) to even the match at a set apiece, 25-14.

Set 3 – After splitting the first two stanzas, the two teams put together a competitive frame in the third. There were four lead changes, and the score was tied at seven different points. The turning point appeared to occur with Asheville holding a 20-18 lead after a Catamount kill. Following that point, the Bulldogs scored five of the next seven points to clinch a 25-20 win and to pull back in front.

Set 4 – Asheville put together perhaps its most complete effort in what proved to be the final set. The Bulldogs attacked at a match-high of .297 clip to go along with two aces and three total blocks. With all those factors working, Asheville clinched its first win of the fall season by taking the fourth frame,
25-15.

Stat Standouts – Peyton McClinton paced the Bulldog offense with 18 kills to go with 16 digs. Lexy Cole had an efficient day on the attack with a .385 hitting percentage and 12 kills, and Hackett also posted a double-figure kill total with 10. Senior Grace Volk picked up another double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. Anna Skryd, meanwhile, led Asheville in digs for the second straight day finishing with 17.

Note from Coach – "The team was fantastic today and very determined to get a win," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We played with a lot of intensity after our second set loss and never looked back. I'm happy for the girls because they worked extremely hard these two days to get a win."

Next Up – Asheville will return to action next Friday and Saturday for three more non-conference matches at Tennessee Tech. The Bulldogs are slated to take on Valparaiso (2 p.m.) and South Alabama (6 p.m.) on Friday before taking on Tennessee Tech on Saturday at 3 p.m.
