Women’s soccer battles, drops season opener 3-0 at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team opened up its season on Thursday at Appalachian State, falling to the Mountaineers 3-0.
Although Mountaineers registered 10 total shots, the Bulldogs created chances of their own, firing five shots and totaling three corners. Appalachian State would get on the board in the 26th, adding a second in the 34th and a third in the 59th. Courtney O'Malley got the start in net, picking up a save, while rookie Jewell Padilla registered a pair of shots. The two sides were even with five fouls apiece.
"Despite the result, I am really happy with the application of the players to stick to the game plan and cause Appalachian State problems at times," said first-year Head Coach Andy McNab. "I think there are a lot of positives to take into the rest of the season."
How it Happened
Appalachian State pressured first, getting a pair of corners and registering a shot in the first 11 minutes. The Bulldogs responded with two corners in the 16th, but the Mountaineers would break the stalemate in the 26th when Kirsten Seeley made the score 1-0. In the 34th, Appalachian State would double their lead after a goal from Addie Cooper, going into the break ahead 2-0.
Asheville opened up the second with a corner early, but Appalachian State jumped in front 3-0 in the 59th when Sarah Widderich found Hayley Boyles. In the 78th, Gillian Oyos ripped a shot that was turned away by Kerry Eagleston. Padilla had a chance that was fired just wide in the 83rd, but the Bulldogs could not pull one back, falling 3-0.
