ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After four straight road games, the UNC Asheville baseball team will return home to Greenwood Field for a three-game series against Longwood this weekend. The Bulldogs and Lancers will face off in a doubleheader Friday starting at 2 p.m. before concluding the series with a single game on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
Probable Pitching Matchups
Game 1 – RHP Dominick D'Ercole (LWU) vs. LHP Justin Honeycutt (AVL)
Game 2 – RHP Dylan Saale (LWU) vs. LHP Jacob Edwards (AVL)
Game 3 – LHP Andrew Melnyk (LWU) vs. RHP Kole Harris (AVL)
Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 4-2 decision on the road at Presbyterian on Tuesday. With the loss, the Bulldogs' record sits at 13-25 overall and 12-18 in Big South play in 2021.
Catch it on CW62 – In addition to the normal ESPN+ broadcasts this weekend, fans in the Asheville area can also watch the first game of Friday's doubleheader and Saturday's series finale on CW62.
#50 for Lankford – Brandon Lankford continues to be one of the top power hitters in the country as he slugged two solo home runs in Tuesday's game at Presbyterian. The two solo shots Tuesday bring Lankford's career total to 50 home runs, which is tied for the second-most in Big South history. He is one of four players in conference history to reach this milestone, joining Winthrop's Jason Colson (53), Coastal Carolina's David Anderson (50), and Gardner-Webb's Chandler Redmond (50).
Playing Well at Home – The Bulldogs have played well on their home field in 2021, winning nine of 14 games, including series victories over Campbell, Radford, Presbyterian, and Charleston Southern. Asheville hopes this success continues for the remainder of its season as seven of its last 10 games will be played at Greenwood Field.
Scouting Longwood – Longwood will make its way to Asheville with nearly the same record as the Bulldogs, 14-25. The Lancers swept a three-game series from Radford last weekend to clinch their first series win in conference play. A player to watch for Longwood is Hayden Harris, who was named the Co-Big South Freshman of the Week after going 8-for-12 with two runs and two RBI in the series vs. Radford.
Series Rewind vs. Longwood – Asheville and Longwood have met a total of 18 times since 2013. The Lancers have won 11 of those matchups, however, the Bulldogs have held the edge when the two teams meet up in Asheville, winning six of nine of the meetings. Among those six victories include a three-game sweep for the Bulldogs over the Lancers at Greenwood Field in March 2019 by scores of 11-8, 14-3, and 11-8.
Attendance Policy – Face coverings are required, and social distancing protocols will be in place that will limit seating capacity to Asheville fans that are on the pass list. Attendees will be allowed to bring tailgate chairs, and game operations staff will direct fans to sit in a socially distant manner. No visiting fans will be admitted.
