BIG SOUTH RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Wednesday that UNC Asheville volleyball players Peyton McClinton and Grace Volk earned All-Big South honors as the league unveiled its all-conference teams and individual awards for the 2021 spring season. McClinton landed a spot on the All-Big South Second Team, while Volk was named the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, headlining the All-Academic team honorees.Â
McClinton had a breakout spring season for the Bulldogs leading the team in points scored (227), kills (201), and attack attempts (595). The junior outside hitter registered double-digit kill totals in 10 of the team's 16 matches this spring, which included a pair of 20-plus kill outings. McClinton, who was named the conference's player of the week on March 9, notched a career-high 25 kills in a match vs. Radford on March 11. The 25-kills from McClinton in that match was just one shy of tying the program record for kills in a single match.Â
By being named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Volk joined an exclusive club becoming just the second Bulldog volleyball player ever to achieve the honor, joining Lorelee Smith (1997). Volk, who received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship late last month, currently holds a 4.0 grade-point average pursuing a chemistry degree at Asheville. In addition to her work in the classroom, Volk paced the Bulldogs in assists (493), hitting percentage (.263), and placed second in digs (160) and aces (13). Furthermore, Volk appeared in and played in every set for Asheville this spring and notched a double-double in seven of the 16 contests.Â
