Bulldogs net two in the second, fall by one at Presbyterian

04.03.2021 | Men's Soccer

CLINTON, S.C.  – Having not played in nearly two weeks, the UNC Asheville men's soccer team battled back from a 3-0 deficit at Presbyterian on Saturday, ultimately falling to the Blue Hose 3-2.

The Bulldogs, whose game last weekend against Gardner-Webb was postponed due to COVID-safety protocols within the Runnin' Bulldogs program, last played on March 21 against USC Upstate. After Presbyterian scored three goals in the first, Taylor Durall and Izzy Garcia each scored in the second but Asheville would run out of time.

Where they Stand
Asheville falls to 2-3-1 overall on the season, while Presbyterian improves to 4-4-1 and 2-4-1 in Big South play. Asheville has two games remaining (High Point, Gardner-Webb) to try and climb back into the top four and qualify for the Big South Tournament.

Notable Numbers
  • Durall scores third goal of season
  • Garcia finds back of the net for first goal of career
  • Presbyterian totals eight shots, Asheville totals seven
What's Next
Asheville returns to the field on Thursday, traveling to High Point with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

How it Happened
It didn't take long for Presbyterian to strike, burying their first shot of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Izzy Garcia registered a shot for Asheville that was blocked. In the 15th, the Blue Hose earned a corner that led to a Daniel Anani goal to double up the lead. In the 18th, Miles Peay worked his way in for a shot, followed by a chance from Durall, but Presbyterian kept the 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs would continue to press, but it was Presbyterian who would strike once more just before half to jump in front 3-0.

The Blue Hose pushed the pace again in the second, but it was Asheville that got on the board in the 63rd when Conor Behan set up Durall for his third goal of the season. The Bulldogs took the momentum, converting on their next chance in the 74th when Garcia ripped a shot to cut the lead to one. Asheville registered a trio of corners in the following nine minutes and Behan pushed a shot wide in the 84th which represented Asheville's last chance of the game.
