Men’s soccer drops contest at nationally-ranked High Point

04.08.2021 | Men's Soccer

HIGH POINT, N.C.  – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team traveled to High Point on Thursday, falling to the nationally ranked Panthers 5-1.

The Panthers, who entered the game ranked No. 15 by Top Drawer Soccer and Top No. 23 in the official NCAA Poll (United Soccer Coaches), scored five unanswered after Miles Peay opened the game with a goal in the sixth minute.

"There is a reason why they are ranked 15 in the country," said head coach Mick Giordano. "That is an extremely well-coached and disciplined High Point group. We created chances and had some positive moments but ultimately were undone by a few moments of brilliance."

Where they Stand
Asheville falls to 2-4-1 overall on the season, while High Point improves to 10-1 and a perfect 8-0 in Big South play.

Notable Numbers

·         Peay scores first goal of season

·         Panthers respond with five

·         Bulldogs total eight shots

What's Next
Asheville caps off its regular season with a home match against Gardner-Webb on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's soccer game which will begin at noon.

"We must learn and regroup as if we don't learn from our mistakes, we won't have the opportunity to find success in the future," Giordano said. "Ultimately we have to be better as a staff and I need to ensure the group understands what it takes to win at this level. All to play for on Sunday now."

How it Happened
The Bulldogs capitalized on their first opportunity when Nate Evans found Miles Peay for the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. High Point responded almost immediately, equalizing in the ninth. Conor Behan fired a shot wide and the Panthers had a couple of opportunities before pulling ahead 2-1 in the 22nd.  Each team had more chances, but the two sides went into the break with the 2-1 score.

High Point came right out and pressured in the second, adding a third goal in the 55th minute when Alex Abril fired a shot to the lower left of the net. Asheville created chances down the stretch as Noe Varner had a shot blocked and earned a corner leading to an A.J. Devivo shot one that was just high. The Panthers extended their lead in the 83rd and added another in the 88th to take the game 5-1.
