03.30.2021 | Women's Volleyball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Playing in its first match in over a week, the UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory (25-20, 29-27, 25-20) over Winthrop Tuesday afternoon at the Justice Center.
Stat Standouts – Like she has done several times this spring, Peyton McClinton paced the Bulldogs on the attack, finishing with 19 kills and hit .317 for the match on 46 attempts. The tandem of Molly Hackett (12 kills) and Lexy Cole (eight kills) also provided an efficiency boost to the Bulldog offense finishing with hitting percentages of .391 and .538, respectively. Grace Volk finished the day with 35 assists and 12 digs. Senior Kasey West also finished with a team-high 13 digs, chipped in six assists to go with an ace to help the cause.
Set 1 – There was not a ton of separation between the Eagles and Bulldogs to open Tuesday's match. Asheville started well, scoring seven of the first 10 points. However, Winthrop battled back to tie the score at 10 and then again at 15. With the score knotted at 15, the Bulldogs seized momentum. Cole and McClinton combined for a block and picked up two kills each down the stretch to keep Asheville in front for the rest of the frame, eventually winning 25-20.
Set 2- Facing a 1-0 deficit, Winthrop began the second frame well. The Eagles saw their lead grow to as many as six points, 19-13, which forced Asheville to burn a timeout to regroup. Asheville did just that going on a 9-3 run to tie the score at 22. Winthrop and Asheville would be tied at 24, 25, and 26 as the two teams jockeyed not only to get to set point but also pick it up. Bulldogs would clinch the set thanks to back-to-back kills from Cole and McClinton to give Asheville the 29-27 victory.
Set 3 – Perhaps riding the exciting second set's momentum, the Bulldogs put together their best offensive set of the match in the third. As a team, Asheville attacked at a .371 clip on 35 attacks and racked up 18 kills in what proved to be the final set as it won the frame, 25-20. McClinton totaled eight kills on 11 attacks in the stanza alone, while the trio of Kat Cruser, Cole, and Hackett combined for 10 kills and posted a collective hitting percentage of .500 on 16 attempts.
Note from Coach – "The team played a phenomenal match," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "The players had a lot of confidence and belief, so even in moments of the match when it looked like the opponent could overcome our momentum, we maintained our composure and marched forward. Proud of the way the team performed today."
Next Up – Asheville and Winthrop will meet again on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for both teams' 2021 spring season finale. Before the match, the Bulldogs will honor their two seniors: Kasey West and Cecilia Stack. The match can be seen on ESPN+.
