ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team outlasted Winthrop in a five-set battle (25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-6) to conclude its 2021 spring season Wednesday afternoon at the Justice Center. The Bulldogs, who honored their two seniors Cecilia Stack and Kasey West before the match, wrapped up this unique season with a record of 8-8.
Stat Standouts – Plenty of Bulldogs had stellar statistical performances to cap their 2021 spring seasons. Molly Hackett tallied a career-high 21 kills and added 14 digs. Grace Volk also posted a double-double leading the team in assists (43) and digs (23). Stack paced the Bulldogs on the block with one solo block and six block assists, while West finished her Bulldog career with a 20-dig performance.
Set 1 – Asheville started fast out of the gates scoring the first five points of the match. Winthrop called a pair of timeouts to try and throw the Bulldogs off their rhythm, but the Bulldogs kept attacking before eventually taking the first frame, 25-16.
Set 2- The second set started well for the Bulldogs as well. Asheville saw its lead grow to as many as eight points at 13-5. Winthrop, however, chipped away at the Bulldog advantage totaling 13 kills and to go along with four blocks. With the improved play, the Eagles evened the match at a set apiece, 25-22.
Set 3 – With the match tied at one, both teams jostled to seize the momentum in the third. The score was tied at four different points. Asheville, however, was able to edge the Eagles out in a competitive third frame thanks in part to Hackett, who finished the stanza with six kills. Volk also was key in Asheville's set win, nearly accounting for a double-double in the third alone with 11 assists and seven digs.
Set 4 – Asheville and Winthrop played yet another competitive frame in the fourth. No lead in the fourth was more than three points. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage, but the Eagles answered back to tie the score and pulled in front. The remainder of the frame was Asheville battling back. The Bulldogs were able to tie the score at 23 late in the frame before Winthrop picked up back-to-back points to force a fifth set, 25-23.
Set 5 – In the match-deciding fifth set, the Bulldogs came up with their best performance of the afternoon. Asheville attacked at a .500 clip with 11 kills on 22 attacks with no errors. The hot-hitting Asheville offense scored eight of the first 10 points before finishing the fifth frame, 15-6.
Note from Coach – What a way to finish the season," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "The team was fantastic and was able to win this absolute battle of wills. In the end, we played with a lot of heart and determination. After all, we wanted to send our seniors out on the highest note possible.
