Volleyball Closes Spring Season with Two Matches vs. Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will close out its spring season with a pair of matches against Winthrop this week at the Justice Center. Asheville and Winthrop will match up on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before the season finale on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to air on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – The last time the Bulldogs were in action was back on March 18-19 at USC Upstate. Upstate defeated the Bulldogs twice by identical 3-0 scores. With those results, Asheville's record this spring moved to 6-8.
Joining an Exclusive Club – During those pair of matches at Upstate, setter Grace Volk joined an exclusive club in Asheville volleyball as she became the 13th Bulldog to eclipse 1,000 assists. During the 2021 spring campaign, Volk leads Asheville with 415 assists, ranking second in the Big South.
Bulldog Finding Success off the Court – In addition to her play, Volk also received recognition for her work off it. Volk has been named a recipient of a 2021 Goldwater Scholarship for the academic year of 2021-22. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent national award for an undergraduate student in the natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Volk is one of 410 college students from a pool of 5,000 sophomores and juniors across the country to be selected for the scholarship.
Senior Sendoff – Before Wednesday's match, the Bulldogs will recognize the two seniors on the roster in Kasey West and Cecilia Stack. West and Stack have been vital contributors for the Bulldogs during their time with the program. West, who paces Asheville in digs this season, has earned the Big South Libero of the Week honor twice this season, while Stack has been one of the team's top players on the block, pacing the Bulldogs in both total blocks and block assists in 2019.
Closing the Season on High Note – Regardless of the results, the two matches this week will mark the end of the season for the Bulldogs due to no Big South Volleyball Tournament this spring. Asheville hopes to continue its success in regular-season finales this week as the Bulldogs have won the last five regular-season finales dating back to 2015.
About Winthrop – Winthrop will come to Asheville playing arguably its best volleyball of the season. The Eagles, who are riding a four-match winning streak, are 9-5 overall this spring. Winthrop has a balanced scoring attack with three players scoring 100 points or more. Leading the way is Morgan Bossler, who leads the Eagles in points scored (154.5), hitting percentage (.311), aces (13), and total blocks (51).
Series Rewind vs. Winthrop – Asheville and Winthrop have matched up a total of 72 times since the first meeting back in 1986. The Eagles have won 41 of those matches, including the last two in 2019. Before those two Winthrop victories, the Bulldogs posted a 5-1 versus the Eagles from 2016 through 2018.
