Zaia finishes T-3 as Golf wraps up play at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

03.30.2021 | Women's Golf

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team completed play at the 2021 Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Tuesday, with Venecia Zaia totaling a 6-over-par 222 through three two rounds to finish in a tie for third place individually.

"Congrats to Venecia on a stellar tournament and a much deserved T-3," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "She has been working very hard in the last month on her mental game and this week she proved not only to myself and the team but most importantly to herself that her hard work is paying off!"

Zaia, who participated as an individual, opened up the tournament going 4-over-par in two rounds on Monday. The Murrieta, California, native would finish with a 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday, registering a pair of birdies on holes No. 15 and No. 17 to close out her tournament.

As a team, Asheville finished in ninth place overall on a wet Pinehurst No. 6 course.

"As a team we struggled with the conditions and adapting to them. The course was pretty saturated from some storms that blew through and it got the better of us with our short game. Simple mistakes were compounded, but no one gave up or gave in. I am incredibly proud of how these young women and how they fought for each shot they were presented with."

Phoebe Carles finished in a tie for 30th overall, birdieing holes No. 13 and No. 14. Baylee Evans, who carded a second-round 79, repeated that performance today, with Hailey Pendleton and Madyson Gold rounding out the scoring for Asheville.

"They are so resilient and on the van ride home were already talking about how motivated they are to work on certain aspects of their game over these next two weeks leading up to conference," Schneider said of her team. "It can be easy to get knocked down after a tournament like this, but with every failure in golf, comes growth and these young Women have adopted that mindset to their very core. Already planning how they can bounce back and be better tomorrow!"
