ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Having won its last four matches, the UNC Asheville men's tennis team hits the road Tuesday when it travels to ETSU for a match against the Bucs at 3:30 p.m.
The match, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, was rescheduled due to the weather forecast.
Charlie Morkel had a strong week, going 2-0 at the No. 1 doubles with Jon Brann Reid and 2-0 at the No. 2 singles flight. Morkel and Reid battled to a 7-5 win against Presbyterian, with Morkel downing his opponent 6-3, 6-2 to help the Bulldogs edge out the Blue Hose 4-3. Morkel and Reid repeated their performance Sunday against Radford, with both taking their singles matches in a 5-2 win. Reid is 8-1 in singles action this year, while Leo Bierbaum is 9-2 and Harry Thursfield is 7-3. Thursfield and Bierbaum have been a strong duo at the No. 3 doubles flight, going 7-2 on the season.
Scouting the Bucs
ETSU is 6-6 overall, defeating its lone Big South opponent (Radford) 4-3. Most recently, the Bucs topped Furman 4-3 on Friday. Dimitri Badra has gone 8-4 in singles action and is 5-2 at the No. 1 flight. Frazier Rengifo has done well at the No. 2 flight, going 6-2 with a 7-5 overall singles record. Juan Lugo and Rengifo have been the No. 1 duo for ETSU, going 5-1 as a duo.
Where they Stand
Although Tuesday is not a Big South match, the Bulldogs have locked up at least a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big South Championship (April 16-17), with a chance to grab the No. 1 seed before the season ends.
