03.30.2021 | Men's Tennis
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team traveled to ETSU for a non-conference match on Tuesday, falling to the Bucs 5-2.
Asheville is now to 7-5 overall this season, and will next compete on April 7 when it travels to Gardner-Webb. The winner of that match will win the Big South regular-season championship and lock up the No. 1 seed in the Big South Championship.
Charlie Morkel and Jon Brann Reid fought valiantly at the No. 1 doubles flight, but were topped in a 7-6 tiebreaker as the Bucs took all three doubles. Morkel fared better in singles competition, taking down his opponent in a down-to-the wire match, topping Frazier Rengifo 7-6 (7 tiebreaker) and took the second set narrowly 6-4.
Leo Bierbaum snagged the other point for the Bulldogs, showing his resilience by winning in three sets. Bierbaum took the first set 7-6 with a three-point tiebreaker, dropping the second 3-6 but won a 1-0 (10 tiebreaker) in the third to claim victory at the No. 4 singles.
The match, which was previously scheduled for Wednesday, was moved to Tuesday because of weather.
