Bulldogs Turn in Strong First Day at the Montreat Invitational

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams turned in a stellar first day at the Montreat Invitational on Friday. After one day, the women's team leads the 18 schools competing with 40 points, while the men's team ranks second among 20 institutions with 20 points. 

Asheville's top finish Friday came from India Appleton in the women's 5000-meter run. Appleton finished first with a time of 18:12.90, which is a new career-best for her. Furthermore, Claudia Prieto matched her own school outdoor record in the long jump for the third consecutive meet with a leap of 5.70-meters. Alyx Evans (1500-meters) placed in the top two in her event, logging a career-best time as well (4:54.18). 

For the men's team, freshman Gunner Hogston posted the top finish of the day with a time of 3:58.21 in the 1500-meter run. Fellow freshman Adam Hessler placed fourth in the 5000-meter run (15:08.55) to round out Asheville's top-five finishes. In the field events, Azhar Tyson led the Bulldogs placing 11th in the long jump (6.78-meters). 


Asheville will be back in action on Saturday for day two of the Montreat Invitational. The first events are scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m.
