BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams wrapped up the Montreat Invitational on Saturday. After two days of competition, the men's and women's teams each placed second amongst their respective fields that consisted of over 25 programs.
"We were pleased with our team's competitiveness and how well they supported each other," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "We had plenty of stellar performances over the past two days to build upon."
One school record fell Saturday for the Bulldogs as Claudia Prieto broke the program's outdoor record in the triple jump with a leap of 12.23-meters. Prieto's jump established a new program record and set a new top mark among Big South student-athletes this season. Prieto, who also placed in the top three in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 12.31, capped off a stellar weekend where she matched the school record in the long jump (5.78-meters) that she set earlier this year.
The Bulldogs picked up three event victories on Saturday. Asheville's 4x400-meter relay team of Anthony Mason, Bryson Riddick, Robert Brenneman, and Jalen Anderson placed first with a time of 3:18.00. This time was extremely close to matching the school's outdoor record of 3:17.80 set back in 2017.
Asheville's other two event wins came in field events. Maya Stanley took the top spot in the discus throw (40.93-meters), while Solomon McDonald won the shot put with a toss of 15.89-meters. For McDonald, it marked a new personal-best for him in that event.
In addition to winning events, the Bulldogs also had a few other performances that earned large point totals or were among the best marks ever posted by a Bulldog.
First, the 4x800-meter relay team consisting of Alex Haines, Gunner Hogston, Brock Newsome, and Sage Turner logged the second-fastest time in program history, clocking in at 7:46.86.
Individually, Riddick (400-meter dash) and Anderson (100-meter, 200-meter dash) also logged some fast times in their given events that rank in the top five program's outdoor record book.
Asheville will return to action on April 10 when it competes in the Winthrop Quadrangular.
