Anderson and Prieto Break Records to Highlight Day One of the Catamount Classic

04.16.2021 | Track and Field

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Jalen Anderson (200-meter dash) and Claudia Prieto (long jump) broke outdoor school records in their respective events to highlight day one of the Catamount Classic for the UNC Asheville track and field teams. After all the events Friday, the women's team leads the pack with 48.50 points, while the men's team sits in second place with 39 points.

"It was a very good day for the Bulldogs," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "We had many PRs and seasonal-bests in every event group. Very good performances by student-athletes and coaches."

As mentioned earlier, Prieto broke Asheville's outdoor school record in the long jump with a leap of 5.93-meters. Prieto, who has tied or broken this same record in each meet this season, also broke the meet record in the long jump with her mark on Friday.

Anderson, meanwhile, ran the 200-meter dash in a record-breaking 21.40 seconds in the prelim running of the event. Anderson broke the record held by Milan Ristic (21.62) that has stood since 2012. Anderson will be joined in the final by teammate Anthony Mason, who ran a wind-aided time of 21.30

In addition to the records broken, several other Bulldogs notched personal-best performances on the day. Kathryn Brown qualified for Saturday's 100-meter hurdle finals with a personal-best time of 14.81. In the field events, Maya Stanley placed fourth in the javelin throw with a new personal-best toss of 35.19-meters.

The men's team picked up four top-three finishes on Friday as well. Gunner Hogston (1500m) and Azhar Tyson (long jump) each placed second in their given events, while Alex Haines (1500m) and Daniel Hopkins (5000m run) each finished third.

Day two of the Catamount Classic will begin shortly after noon on Saturday. Live results for day two can be found HERE.
