Bulldogs Fall to USC Upstate to Conclude Road Schedule

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team concluded its road schedule with a 3-0 loss (25-13, 25-16, 25-12) to USC Upstate Friday evening in Big South action.
Stat Standouts – Peyton McClinton paced the Bulldog offense Friday with 10 kills to go along with a pair of aces and seven digs. Grace Volk picked up her fifth double-double of the spring with 23 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, Kasey West led the way totaling 19 digs (6.3 D/S) in the three-set contest with a pair of aces.
Set 1 – Upstate jumped on the Bulldogs early in the first set. The Spartans scored 10 of the first 12 points of the frame. Asheville attempted to regroup with a pair of called timeouts, but Upstate's offense kept its rhythm. The Spartans finished the first hitting at a .385 clip with 16 kills to go with one error on 39 attacks. With Upstate's offense rolling so well, it took the frame, 25-13.
Set 2 – Asheville was able to slow the Spartan attack quite a bit in the second, holding them to a .167 attack percentage. The Bulldog offense, however, was plagued by misfires that gave the Spartans several points. Thanks to the miscues by Asheville, Upstate was able to take the second, 25-16.
Set 3 – It looked early that the Bulldogs had corrected their play to attempt a possible rally as Upstate led by just one, 11-10, following a McClinton kill. However, the Spartans would go on a tear scoring 14 of the following 16 points to finish the match, 25-12. Upstate's work on the block was a big key, as it totaled five blocks in the third set alone.
Note from Coach – "We did not perform well and let opponent run with game without opposition," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We had a lot of unforced errors, which enabled them to be more confident throughout the match. We will get back to work and get ready for our final two matches."
Next Up – Asheville will return to action on March 30-31 as it concludes its regular season with a pair of matches against Winthrop at the Justice Center.
