Men’s Tennis travels to Campbell, Longwood for weekend matchups

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team has a busy weekend ahead, opening up conference play Saturday at Campbell (10:00 a.m.) before traveling to Longwood (1:00 p.m.) for a Big South matchup on Sunday.
Asheville enters the weekend 3-4 overall, and was set to host Presbyterian on Thursday, but the match was moved to March 24 due to weather. The Bulldogs most recently faced Charlotte, being edged out 4-3 at the home of the 49ers. Asheville continued to have success at the doubles, with Charlie Morkel and Jon Brann Reid teaming up for a win at the No. 1 spot and Leo Bierbaum and Harry Thursfield grabbed a 7-5 victory at the No. 3 position, outlasting their opponents to earn the team point for Asheville to move to 4-1 as a team. In singles action, Morkel is 3-3 at the No. 2 flight, while Morkel and Brann Reid are 4-1 as a duo.
Scouting the Camels
Since 2010, Asheville and Campbell have met 13 times, with the Camels taking 11 matches overall. Campbell enters Saturday riding a six-match win streak, with the Bulldogs last win coming in 2016 at the Asheville Racquet Club. Campbell has yet to earn a win this season, going 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in Big South play, most recently falling to Radford 6-1. Benjamin Niv has been a tough out at the No. 1 singles spot, going 3-2 with the team going a combined 2-12 at doubles competition.
Scouting the Lancers
Longwood and Asheville have faced each other 11 times since 2005, with the Bulldogs going 9-2. Asheville had won the last two matches between the two including a road and neutral site game in 2018-19. Longwood enters the weekend 4-4 and 0-1 in conference, falling 6-1 to Gardner-Webb but most recently topping N.C. A&T. The Lancers host Norfolk State on Friday before welcoming the Bulldogs to town.
