SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in three sets on the road at USC Upstate (25-22, 26-24, 25-23) Thursday evening in Big South action.
Stat Standouts – Peyton McClinton led the Bulldogs with 17 kills to go along with 10 digs on Thursday. Molly Hackett also had a good night attacking at a .375 clip to finish with 11 kills. Grace Volk set up McClinton, Hackett, and the rest of the Bulldog attackers with 34 assists. Volk also had four kills herself to go with seven digs. Defensively, Kasey West (22 digs) and Ona Elkins (11 digs) each reached double-figure dig totals. Up front, Lexy Cole paced Asheville with a solo block and four block assists.
Set 1 – Thursday's match opened with a competitive set between the Bulldogs and Spartans. Overall, the score was tied at 15 different points in the frame, and the lead changed hands eight times. The difference in the opening stanza seemed to occur with the score knotted at 20. Upstate was able to score three straight points to go up, 23-20. McClinton picked up a couple more kills to help Asheville's cause, but Upstate matched those kills with points of their own to take the first, 25-22.
Set 2 – It looked like the Bulldogs would even the match at a set apiece during the middle to late stages of the frame. Asheville built a lead to as many as five points on Upstate, 19-14. However, the Spartans rallied with a 6-0 run to regain the advantage. The two teams would battle for the remainder of the stanza with the score tied at 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 before the Spartans notched back-to-back points to finish the set, 26-24.
Set 3 – Facing a three-set sweep, the Bulldogs once again built an early five-point advantage, 10-5. Upstate, meanwhile, repeated its comeback in the third to eventually tie the score at 19. The Spartans picked up a pair of crucial aces to build their lead to four, 23-19. Asheville trimmed the deficit down to one as Upstate reached set points at 24-23. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Upstate picked up a kill to close the match, 25-23.
Note from Coach – "We did all the work to get a lead and made poor decisions when it was time to go for it," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We gave away too many points that we should have converted. Tomorrow is another day, and the hope is for a response."
Next Up – Asheville and Upstate will meet again on Friday. That match will also begin at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
