Volleyball Conclude Road Schedule with Two Matches at USC Upstate

03.17.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will make its final road trip of the 2021 spring season this week as it visits USC Upstate for a pair of matches. Asheville and Upstate will clash on Thursday and Friday, with both matches set for a 6 p.m. first serve on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville picked up a pair of exciting five-set victories over Radford last week at the Justice Center. With the pair of wins, the Bulldogs move their record back to the .500 mark this spring to 6-6.

Peyton Playing Well – Junior Peyton McClinton continued her breakout season last week against Radford. McClinton totaled 48 kills to go with 21 digs in the two victories over the Highlanders. Thursday's outing from McClinton of 25 kills nearly matched the program record of 26 kills set by Christine Lakatos at Presbyterian on November 8, 2013. McClinton's flurry of kills has now put her in the lead among Big South players in that category with 144 kills.

Grace Setting the Scene – Setting up McClinton and the rest of the Bulldog offense this season has been Grace Volk. Volk, who paces the league with 353 assists this spring, has started and played in every set for Asheville. The Arlington, Nebraska native has four double-doubles and finished with a career-high 56 assists in a match at Presbyterian earlier this month.

Road Warriors – In a season unlike any other, the Bulldogs have fared well when they have played on the road. Asheville is 4-2 in matches played away from the Justice Center, which is tied for the second-most road wins in the league behind only High Point's six victories. If the Bulldogs can win at least one match at Upstate, it will mark the first winning record for the Bulldogs on the road since 2010, when it finished 7-6.

About USC Upstate – The Spartans enter the two matches with Asheville sporting a 3-7 record this spring. Upstate is coming off perhaps its performances of the season as it swept Presbyterian on back-to-back days last week. A player to watch for Upstate is Nikki Deslatte, who was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday. Deslatte earned this recognition thanks to 15 kills, a .433 hitting percentage, and 17.0 points to lift the Spartans to those pair of victories over PC.

Series Rewind vs. Upstate – Asheville is 11-5 all-time against Upstate since the first meeting back in 1986, including a 4-2 mark in Spartanburg. The Bulldogs have won the last four matches between the two programs dating back to November 2018.
