03.18.2021 | Women's Golf

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's golfer Madyson Gold was named Big South Co-Freshman of the Week for all events played from March11-17. Gold shares the honor with Praew Nontarux of USC Upstate.

After turning in her lowest collegiate round at her last tournament (Kiawah Classic, 2-over-par 75), Gold opened up the Low Country Intercollegiate on Saturday with a 1-over-par 73, registering birdies on holes No. 2 and No. 16 while parring 13 of the 18 holes overall. The freshman from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, duplicated her performance on Sunday, shooting another 1-over-par 73 with a pair of birdies to nearly grab a top-five finish (+1). The pair of 73's bested her previous career mark of 75. The T-6 was also her best individual finish (T-26 previously).

"Mady is so deserving of being named Co-Freshman of the week," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "Not only because of her stellar play at this last tournament, but because of the things people are not able to see happening behind the scenes. She works hard, has one of the best attitudes and demeanors for golf, is a fantastic teammate and brings out the best in those around her. She makes coaching fun and this is only the beginning for what she can accomplish. This may be the first time you've seen her getting recognized but it surely won't be the last! I am so incredibly proud to be her coach and excited to get to witness her growth over the next three years."

Linnea Hofgren of Gardner-Webb was named Big South Women's Golfer of the Week. This is Gold's first Big South honor and Asheville's second this season (Phoebe Carles).
