CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South announced its first Golfer of the Week awards of the spring season on Thursday, with UNC Asheville women's golfer Phoebe Carles being named Big South Co-Freshman of the Week after her performance in the Lady Bison Point Bay Classic.

Carles shares the award with Sanna Lundmark of Campbell, as Suwarin Yordin of USC Upstate was named Big South Golfer of the Week.

A freshman from Clinton, South Carolina, Carles opened up round one by carding an 80, but bounced back with a strong second round of 75 with birdies on holes No. 6, No. 9 and No.11 to move into a tie for ninth place individually. On Tuesday, the third round of the Point Bay Classic, which was held in Panama City Beach, Florida, was canceled due to rain. Carles' strong debut helped the Bulldogs finish in fifth place overall.

"I'm so incredibly proud of Phoebe for placing top 10 in her first collegiate tournament and equally so with the team placing top 5," said head coach Ericka Schneider.

Asheville returns to the course on March 1, competing in the Kiawah Island Classic.
