USC Upstate Edges Asheville in Closing Seconds, 61-58
02.06.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A 3-pointer from Amaryah Corpening rimmed out as time expired that would have sent Saturday's game into overtime, but instead, USC Upstate claimed its second win in as many days over the UNC Asheville women's basketball team, 61-58.
The setup to Corpening's near buzzer-beater began with Upstate's fast start in the second half. With the score tied at 25, the Spartans went on a 14-4 run to start the third quarter to pressure the Bulldogs. However, Asheville did not give up as it got the deficit within a single possession several times. One of those occurred when Tamiah Lewis knocked down a 3-pointer with 22 seconds to go to make the score 58-55 Upstate. A foul by the Spartans on the screen that set up Lewis' three gave the ball back to the Bulldogs with a chance to tie.
A three from Corpening with 14 seconds to go did not fall, and the Spartans grabbed the rebound. After an Asheville foul, Upstate connected on the first free throw, but the second try was off, and Kai Carter grabbed one of her 13 rebounds and promptly drained a three to get the Bulldogs within one, 59-58, with four seconds to go. After another quick foul by the Bulldogs, the Spartans converted on both free throws. Abigail Wilson then heaved a half-court pass to Carter, who dished it to Corpening for a last-second three that did not fall through the net.
"I'm really proud of our fight and our execution at the end of the game," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "We let them get off to a good start in the third quarter that hurt us, but credit goes to Upstate for hitting a few big shots down the stretch to keep its lead because we were right there."
Individually, the Bulldogs were led Saturday by the tandem of Carter and Wilson. Carter notched her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Wilson picked up her first collegiate double-double finishing the day with 12 points to go with a career-high 13 rebounds. Seniors Nadiria Evans (12 points) and Corpening (10 points) also finished in double figures to lead the Bulldog offense.
"As a team, we talked about persevering, not making excuses, and finding a way," Brown added. "It's disappointing to lose two at home, but we need to find a way to regroup and get ready for next weekend."
Next up for the Bulldogs is a series at Campbell next Friday and Saturday. Fans can catch both games on ESPN+ at 5 and 3 p.m., respectively.
