Corpening’s Late Three Lifts Asheville Past Presbyterian, 61-59

02.16.2021 | Women's Basketball

CLINTON, S.C. – A made 3-pointer from senior Amaryah Corpening in the closing seconds of regulation helped lift the UNC Asheville women's basketball team to a 61-59 victory at Presbyterian Tuesday evening in Big South action. Corpening finished the night with a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

"Presbyterian is a tough place to get a win, so I am extremely happy to get this one," Head Coach Honey Brown said after the game. "We did a great job on the boards most of the game, which was huge for us. A big free throw and the last-second shot from our senior Amaryah was as well!"

Along with Corpening's 22-point outburst, Nadiria Evans was the only other Bulldog to finish the night in double figures with 14 points. Abigail Wilson nearly notched her second straight double-double with eight points and seven rebounds. Faith Adams chipped in eight points as well that included a pair of made threes to round out the leading scorers for Asheville.

Corpening's late make from beyond the arc concluded a stellar fourth quarter for Asheville. The Bulldogs shot an impressive 63.6 percent from the field in the fourth that included a 3-for-4 effort from 3-point range. Asheville also converted on five of its seven free throw attempts and out-rebounded PC seven to four in the final 10 minutes to help the cause.

Before Asheville's stellar fourth quarter, both teams traded sizable runs earlier in the game to set up the exciting finish. First, UNC Asheville put together an 11-0 run in the second quarter to put the Blue Hose in a 10-point hole, 34-24, heading into the halftime break. Presbyterian answered the Bulldog run with one of its own outscoring Asheville 17-5 in the third to regain the lead and put the pressure back on the Bulldogs.

Asheville, now 8-10 overall and 7-6 in Big South play, will return home to host Winthrop in a two-game Big South series Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is set for a 5 p.m., and Saturday's series finale is set to get underway at 4 p.m. Both games will be on ESPN+ with Friday's game also airing locally on CW62.
