02.05.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell to USC Upstate by a score of 62-49 Friday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. Asheville's overall record moves to 7-9 on the season, and 6-5 in Big South play with the loss.
Senior Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs on the score sheet Friday with 17 points to go with eight rebounds. It marks the tenth game this season Evans has led the Bulldogs in scoring. Kai Carter nearly finished with a double-double as well with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Amaryah Corpening chipped in 11 points as well. Raquel Cassidy had a good day on the glass grabbing six rebounds in a little over eight minutes of playing time.
The first two quarters were centered around Upstate's ability to get inside and score against the Bulldogs. Overall, the Spartans outscored Asheville 16-6 in the paint in the first two quarters. Additionally, Upstate was able to grab six offensive rebounds that led to seven second-chance points. With rebounding and inside scoring working well, the Spartans grew their lead to as many as seven points in the closing seconds of the half and led the Bulldogs by that margin at the break, 32-25.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Spartans continued to attack close to the basket. Through this approach, Upstate was able to grow its lead to as many as 15 points with 4:37 to go in regulation. Facing its largest deficit of the afternoon, the Bulldogs found a spark and were able to cut the Spartan lead to eight points. Unfortunately for Asheville, the Spartans knocked down some key free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory, 62-49.
Asheville and Upstate will matchup again Saturday in the series finale. Saturday's game, which is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off, can be watched on ESPN+. Mike Gore will have the radio call each day on Rewind 100.3, and live stats will be available as well.
