Bulldogs Return Home to Host USC Upstate
02.04.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will be back in action this weekend as it hosts USC Upstate in a two-game Big South series on Friday and Saturday. Both games are set to begin at 2 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – The Bulldogs dropped an 82-64 decision on the road at Presbyterian Wednesday evening. The loss moved Asheville's overall record to 7-8 and 6-4 in Big South play.
Count on Corpening – One bright spot for the Bulldogs Wednesday was the play of senior Amaryah Corpening. Corpening finished the contest with a team-high 19 points on a 7-for-15 effort from the field. Corpening has stepped up, especially against Big South competition averaging 12.2 points per game compared to 10.6 in the team's five non-conference games.
Nearing Another Milestone – After joining the exclusive 1,000-point club earlier this season, Nadiria Evans is nearing another milestone. Evans, who is averaging a league-best 19.5 points per game, needs 51 more points to become just the tenth Bulldog to score 1,200 points in their career. The last Bulldog to accomplish this feat was Shonese Jones (2011-2015), who finished her time in Asheville with 1,411 points.
Kai for Three – Sophomore Kai Carter is currently tied for the second in the Big South with 34 made 3-pointers. Carter, who knocked down four threes Wednesday at PC, also ranks fifth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage, checking in at 39.1 percent.
Home Sweet Home – The Bulldogs have built one of the more distinct home-court advantages in the Big South lately. Over the last three seasons, Asheville has won 25 games at Kimmel Arena. Among Big South schools, only High Point (30) and Campbell (28) have won more games on their home floor than the Bulldogs during that stretch.
About USC Upstate – USC Upstate currently holds an overall record of 5-14, including a 3-11 mark in Big South play. The Spartans are coming off back-to-back losses to Radford (54-45, 44-41) but defeated Gardner-Webb on the road (70-68) before that series.
Series Rewind vs. Opponent – The all-time series between Asheville and USC Upstate has been one of runs. The Spartans had the edge early on, winning five of the first seven matchups, but the Bulldogs have rebounded to win the last seven meetings.
How to Follow – As mentioned earlier, both Friday's and Saturday's games can be watched on ESPN+. Mike Gore will have the radio call each day on Rewind 100.3, and live stats will be available as well.
