Bulldogs Drop Second Straight to Gardner-Webb

02.26.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell for the second time in as many days to Gardner-Webb Friday afternoon at Kimmel Arena by a score of 76-56. With the loss, the Bulldogs' record moves to 10-12 overall and 9-8 in Big South action.

Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs on the scoresheet Friday with 20 points on a 9-for-15 effort from the field. It marks the eighth time this season that Evans has scored 20 or more points in a game, which ranks second in the conference. Kai Carter also neared the 20-point mark, finishing with 19 points with a trio of makes from 3-point range.

Gardner-Webb picked up where it left off Thursday to begin Friday's contest. GWU's Lauren Bevis knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the game to stake her team to an early lead.

The swarming Gardner-Webb defense from Thursday also returned Friday as it notched nine steals and forced 17 Bulldog turnovers total in the first two quarters. When Asheville held possession and attempted a field goal, it fared well, converting 46.2 percent of the time. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs also snatched six offensive rebounds and attempted 13 more field goals than Asheville. With the GWU defense, long-distance shooting, and work on the offensive glass working together, Asheville found itself down by 14 points at halftime, 42-28.

Asheville made a couple of comeback attempts in the second half as it knocked the deficit down to as little as seven points. However, whenever the Bulldogs got to that point, Gardner-Webb would answer back and put together a run of its own. Asheville attempted nine 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to mount one last comeback try, but only one found the bottom of the net. Gardner-Webb, meanwhile, built its lead to as many as 21 points before settling for the 76-56 victory.

Asheville will wait to see what is next in terms of an opponent. The Bulldogs will either play again on Tuesday and Wednesday to make up previous postponements, or they will begin play in the Big South Women's Basketball Tournament.
