High Point Sweeps Asheville in Three Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in a three-set match to High Point (25-10, 25-19, 25-17) Wednesday afternoon at the Justice Center.
Set 1 – The first frame of Wednesday's match was controlled by High Point from start to finish. HPU began the first set scoring the first four points. Asheville regrouped to get the deficit back down to two, 6-4, but the Panthers promptly built their lead out to eight thanks to a 6-0 run forcing a Bulldog timeout. High Point's offense, which hit .483 in the first, kept clicking the rest of the way and won the set by a score of 25-10.
Set 2 – The second set was much more of a back-and-forth affair. Asheville and High Point were tied at 14 different points in the stanza. The improved play from the Bulldogs can be traced in part to their work defensively. Asheville edged the Panthers 13-12 in terms of digs, with Anna Skryd leading the charge with seven digs by herself in the second set alone. Even with improved defense from the Bulldogs, High Point persevered to take the second as well, 25-19.
Set 3 – Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Bulldogs battled the Panthers well to start the third set. The score read 12-12 towards the middle of the frame, but HPU rattled off a 7-0 run to regain the momentum. The Bulldogs were able to get back within six a few points later, but the HPU lead proved too large to overcome as the Panthers finished off the three-set win, 25-17.
Stat Standouts – Peyton McClinton notched a season-high eight kills to pace the Bulldog offense Wednesday. Grace Volk finished the three-set match with a team-high 13 assists, while Skryd led Asheville's defense, notching the first double-digit dig performance of the season for the Bulldogs finishing with 13 digs.
Next Up – The same two teams will meet again on Thursday in the series finale. The first serve is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
