Volk Posts Double-Double as Volleyball Falls to High Point

02.18.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to High Point (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) Thursday afternoon at the Justice Center. Grace Volk finished with her first double-double of the season with 19 assists and 11 digs to pace the Bulldogs.

"It is important to recognize and be thankful for the work of our Athletic Director, Janet R. Cone, and the athletics department for creating safe conditions for us to be able to practice and compete," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "Without our "team behind the team" it would be very difficult. So, this a victory in itself, and we all celebrate and welcome the opportunity to play."

Set 1 – High Point jumped on Asheville early, scoring eight of the match's first 10 points. The Bulldogs brought the deficit back down to four points on a couple of occasions, but HPU's offense kept clicking. Overall, the Panthers finished the first set with an attack percentage of .389 with 17 kills on 36 attempts with just three errors. With the Panther offense rolling so well, HPU took the first set, 25-15.

Set 2 – After trading the first eight points of the second, High Point put together a sizable run. With the score tied at four, the Panthers went on a 9-1 run to put the pressure back on the Bulldogs. The tandem of Peyton McClinton and Hannah Spicer each notched four kills in the frame to give Asheville a spark, but that HPU run from earlier proved too large to overcome, and the Bulldogs fell, 25-17.

Set 3 – The Bulldogs put together their best set of the match in the third. Asheville got contributions from several players as six different Bulldogs scored a point. The balanced attack helped Asheville keep pace with High Point as the score led by just two, 19-17, late in the frame. Despite the Bulldogs' effort, High Point scored six of the last nine points to finish off the three-set victory, 25-20. HPU scored 20 of its 25 points in the third on a kill.

Stat Standouts – As mentioned earlier, Volk notched a double-double Thursday. It marked the first double-double by a Bulldogs this season. McClinton set a new career-high with 10 kills to go with seven digs. Spicer led Asheville on the serve with four aces, and Lexy Cole did the same on the block with three block assists.

"Our team is searching for rhythm and consistency," Santos added. "The players are working hard, so we just need to keep moving forward with our goals in mind, improving every match."

Next Up – Asheville will hit the road for the first time this year next weekend as it travels to Gardner-Webb on February 27-28. Saturday's match is scheduled to get started at noon, while Sunday's is set for a 2 p.m. first serve.
