Bulldogs Drop Match on Saturday to Campbell

02.13.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell in three sets to Campbell (25-18, 25-15, 25-15) for the second straight day Saturday afternoon at the Justice Center. The loss moves Asheville's record on the young season to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in Big South play.

Set 1 – Asheville opened Saturday's match clicking well offensively. As a team, the Bulldogs attacked at a .281 clip on 32 attacks with 10 kills and just one attack error. However, Campbell's offense was even better, totaling 20 kills on 41 tries. This disparity in offensive output was enough to give the Fighting Camels the first set, 25-18.

Set 2 – When the match resumed for the second set, Campbell was even better offensively. Collectively, Campbell attacked 29 times, and 16 of those ended in a kill. Asheville tried to get the Fighting Camels off rhythm a couple of times with timeouts, but Campbell kept at it and eventually took the second frame, 25-15.

Set 3 – In what proved to be the final set of the contest, Campbell held the lead for the entire set and finished off its fourth 3-0 victory of the season, 25-15. Asheville kept it close early, though. After a Bulldog timeout, Grace Volk and Cecilia Stack notched back-to-back kills to get Asheville within one point, 12-11. However, the Fighting Camels closed the set on a 13-4 run to close out the match.

Stat Standouts – Asheville had several contributors offensively Saturday as six different players had three or more kills. Leading this effort was the tandem Peyton McClinton and Camilly Cristiny, who each had six kills. The duo of Harley Middleton and Stack were Asheville's most accurate on the attack combining for nine kills on 21 tries with just one attack error. Defensively, Volk and Anna Skryd led the way with seven digs apiece.

Next Up – The Bulldogs will be back in action next week when they host High Point at the Justice Center in another Big South series. Fans can watch both matches on ESPN+.
