02.12.2021 | Women's Volleyball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell to Campbell in three sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-19) in its first match of the 2021 spring season Friday afternoon at the Justice Center.
Set 1 – Asheville began its first match of the new season well, scoring seven of the first 10 points. Campbell, however, kept pecking away at the Bulldog lead throughout the frame. The Bulldogs held the lead as late as 16-15, but the Fighting Camels went on a 10-5 run not only to gain the advantage but take the first set, 25-21. Lexy Cole had a stellar opening set of 2021, finishing with three kills on three attack attempts to pace the Bulldog offense.
Set 2 – Much like the first set, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead. Asheville led by five at one point (10-5), but Campbell quickly erased the deficit to tie the score at 12. Asheville and Campbell jostled for the lead in the ensuing points, but momentum seemed to turn after an attack error made the score, 18-17, Campbell. Following that, Campbell went on a 7-1 run to finish off the second set, 25-18.
Set 3 – Having dropped the first two sets, the Bulldogs battled but could not string consecutive points together in the early stages of the third set. Overall, the score was tied at nine different points in the third. Campbell's offense eventually started to click, finishing with 15 kills and a .306 attack percentage in what turned out to be the match's final set, 25-19.
Stat Standouts – Hannah Spicer paced the Bulldogs with eight kills on 19 attacks on Friday. Grace Volk dished out 16 assists, and newcomer Camilly Cristiny paced the Bulldog defense with seven digs and had one of the team's block assists.
Next Up – The Bulldogs and Fighting Camels will match up again on Saturday to conclude the series. The first serve is set 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
