ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will open its spring season this weekend as it hosts Campbell for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday at the Justice Center. Friday's match is set to begin at 3 p.m., while Saturday's is slated for a start time of 2 p.m.
It has been a while – The two matches for Asheville this weekend will be the first matches for the Bulldogs since the conclusion of the 2019 season. The 2019 Bulldogs compiled a record of 13-13 overall, including a 7-7 mark against Big South competition.
Preseason Prediction – The Bulldogs were selected to finish sixth in the annual Big South Preseason Poll that was released late last month. To view the entire preseason poll announcement, click HERE.
About the 2020-21 Bulldogs – During the offseason, Asheville has welcomed seven new players to the program to mesh with nine players that are back from the 2019 campaign. Among the returners are the tandem of Molly Hackett and Cecilia Stack. Hackett is the team's top returning attacker finishing with 202 kills, while Stack tallied 130 kills herself and finished second on the squad in blocks (60) in 2019.
Scouting Campbell – Campbell has two matches under its belt so far this spring as it defeated USC Upstate twice last weekend in three sets. A few players to watch for Campbell are Lailah Green, Chloe Cook, and Sarah Colla. Green led the Fighting Camels with 25 kills in the two matches against Upstate, while Cook added 18 kills on her way to being named the Big South's Freshman of the Week. Colla, meanwhile, chipped in 15 kills, and is the Big South's Preseason Player of the Year.
Series Rewind vs. Opponent – Asheville boasts a 19-9 record all-time against Campbell with the first meeting occurring in 1986. However, the Fighting Camels have held the edge lately winning four of the last five tilts between the two programs, including both matches in the fall of 2019.
