Bulldogs rally late but fall in their season opener to UNC Greensboro, 52-48
11.09.2021 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit to get within one possession of UNC Greensboro in its season opener on Tuesday. Despite the stellar effort by the Bulldogs, UNCG held on for the 52-48 victory.
"Today was a tough shooting night but give credit to UNCG," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "They came up with a few more hustle plays than we did, especially to make a few runs. Our rebounding has to be better overall. We'll get back to work in practice tomorrow and be ready for Western Carolina on Friday."
Nadiria Evans led Asheville on Tuesday, finishing with a team-high 14 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. Kai Carter narrowly missed out on a double-double, finishing with eight points led the team with 11 rebounds. Amanda Blake had a nice season-opener matching a career-high with six points off the bench on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor to round out the stat leaders for Asheville.
Both Asheville and UNCG had some trouble getting their respective offenses going to start Tuesday's contest. The Spartans shot 1-for-13 from the field in the first quarter compared to a 4-for-17 mark for the Bulldogs. The low-scoring first quarter came to an end with Asheville holding a 9-3 lead.
Following a sluggish start, the Spartans rebounded in a big way in the second quarter. UNCG outscored the Bulldogs 21-4 in the frame, boosted its field goal percentage to 47.4, and held the rebounding advantage 13-8. Asheville, meanwhile, did not help itself turning the ball over on six occasions. Thanks to the big swing in momentum, the Spartans took a 24-13 lead into halftime.
The third and fourth quarters were all about the Bulldogs trying to put a dent in UNCG's lead. After not having much luck with shots dropping in the first two quarters, Asheville finally had some fall in the second half. Included in the made shots for Asheville were four makes from beyond the arc (three in the third, one in the fourth).
With the Bulldogs regaining their shooting touch, they closed the gap all the way down to one possession with a little under five minutes to play after a 3-pointer from Faith Adams made it 48-46 UNCG. After a made field goal from the Spartans, a key layup from freshman Jordaynia Ivie made it a two-point game again, 50-48, with 1:21 to go. A couple of potentially costly UNCG turnovers gave the Bulldogs a few attempts to either tie the game or go ahead in the final minute. Unfortunately, none of those tries found the bottom of the net as the Spartans hit a couple of late free throws to finish off the 52-48 victory.
Asheville will return to action on Friday when it travels to take on Western Carolina. Friday's matchup with the Catamounts is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time, and it can be seen on ESPN+.
