Bulldogs edge Western Carolina in overtime, 74-72, for first win

11.12.2021 | Women's Basketball

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team notched its first victory of the 2021-22 season on Friday as it defeated rival Western Carolina by a score of 74-72 in overtime. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 1-1.

A total of three Bulldogs finished Friday night's game in double figures. Nadiria Evans led Asheville in scoring for the second straight game, netting a game-high 31 points on a 13-for-25 effort from the field. Kai Carter chipped in 17 points to go with seven rebounds, and Jordaynia Ivie added 10 points, five rebounds of her own, to help the cause.

"What a great game," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "Sometimes it's a game of runs, and we had one more run. Road wins are hard to get, so I'm really proud of our fight against a good team."

Friday's contest began well for Asheville as it led the Catamounts by a score of 17-11 after one quarter. Evans was a major reason for the Bulldogs' early success netting 14 of the team's 17 points. WCU did close the gap a bit in the second quarter, but Asheville still led 30-27 at halftime.

It looked like in the late stages of the third quarter that Western Carolina may decisively win Friday's game as it turned a 36-33 deficit into a 48-39 lead thanks to a 15-3 run to close out the frame. Credit goes to the Bulldogs, however, as they put together arguably their best quarter of basketball to date on the young season in the fourth.

Asheville shot an impressive 68.2 percent from the field in the final quarter, including a 3-for-7 effort from long distance. The Bulldogs instituted some pressure defense in the closing minutes to force Western Carolina into some mistakes, and it worked as their last three made field goals in regulation came off WCU turnovers. After that chaos caused by the Bulldog defense, Faith Adams knocked down a clutch free throw to tie the score at 67 with nine seconds to go. WCU did have a pair of shots in the closing seconds, but neither found the bottom of the net, so the Bulldogs headed to overtime for the first time since March 6, 2019.

There was not a ton of offense in overtime, but Asheville received some critical buckets from two of its most experienced players. Carter gave Asheville the lead 71-70 on a jump shot in the lane before Evans connected a jumper of her own and sunk a free throw with 14 seconds to go to seal Asheville's 74-72 win.

Asheville will look for its second straight victory on Monday as it welcomes Mars Hill to Kimmel Arena for its home opener. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Lions is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
