Bulldogs battle but fall to Campbell on Senior Day

11.06.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team battled hard but ultimately fell to Campbell in three sets (25-9, 25-21, 25-23) Saturday afternoon in the Bulldogs' Senior Day and 2021 home finale.

Stat Standouts – Leading the way for Asheville on Saturday was one of its seniors, Camilly Cristiny. Cristiny totaled a career-high nine kills against Campbell, eclipsing her previous-best mark of six that she also set against the Camels last spring. Carley Modlin also provided a boost for Bulldog offense finishing with five kills on just seven attempts for a .714 hitting percentage. Rounding out the statistical leaders was Brandy Kishbaugh, who tallied her third straight double-double, finishing with 15 assists and 13 digs.

Set 1 – Campbell was ready to roll right away Saturday as it scored seven of the first eight points of the match. The Camels not only attacked at a .450 clip in the first but also notched five aces in the opening frame. Asheville did not have an answer to the Camels' potent offense as the latter when on to take the first stanza convincingly, 25-9.

Set 2 – Asheville righted the ship in the second, racking up 14 kills after finishing with just eight in the first. Much like it did in the first, Campbell jumped out to an early, but the Bulldogs battled back this time around. An ace from senior Molly Hackett trimmed Campbell's lead to just two points at 21-19. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Campbell scored four of the following six points to go up 2-0 in the match, 25-21.

Set 3 – Despite being down 2-0, the Bulldogs kept at it in what proved to be the final frame of Saturday's contest. Back-to-back kills from Cristiny made the score 19-19 late in the third. Campbell promptly answered, however, with a 3-0 run to regain the lead, 22-19. The swings in momentum were not finished as the Bulldogs scored four of the following five points to tie the score at 23. Even with the stellar comeback from Asheville, Campbell persevered and finished off the match, scoring the following two points to seal the victory, 25-23.

Note from Coach – "A good performance from our players today," said Head Coach Frederico Santos afterward. "I thought we fought well and could've got something more from the match, but we will keep working. We got two more matches to prepare for, and we will give it our all."

Next Up – Asheville will close out its regular season next weekend when it visits High Point on Friday and North Carolina A&T on Saturday. The start times for those two matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
