Men’s soccer rallies in rainy conditions, but falls in overtime 2-1

10.06.2021 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C.  – The UNC Asheville Men's Soccer team hosted Radford in rainy Asheville on Wednesday afternoon, with Myles Edmondson scoring in the 87th minute to extend the game before the Highlanders netted the game winner as time winded down in the first overtime to take the contest 2-1.

The game, which was played at local John B. Lewis Field due to weather, had periods of heavy rain throughout both halves. The Bulldogs now drop to 1-8 and are 0-3 in conference play, while Radford improves to 3-6 and 1-1 in league play.

"It's a tough one to take," said head coach Mick Giordano of the loss. "Our guys battled in the conditions, and showed resilience to equalize late. Credit to Radford for their play today. I'm proud of our fight and we'll need to learn from this as we have a tough opponent in Campbell on Saturday."

The Game at a Glance

  • Ryan Machado-Jones scores two goals in win
  • Edmondson nets first goal in 87th minute
  • Bulldogs outshoot Highlanders 18-12 with seven shots on frame

How it Happened
The conditions were relatively good as the teams kicked off and Asheville took advantage, registering five shots in the first 12 minutes of play. Radford bounced back with a chance and in the 31st, Machado-Jones put the Highlander ahead 1-0. With the rain starting to pour, the Bulldogs fired four more shots before the break but went into half trailing 1-0.

Due to the rain and wet field, play was slow to start the second half but Larsen Hackworth had a couple of chances in the 55th. With 20 minutes to play, Jake Kemhadjian nearly equalized but the Highlanders escaped for the time being. As the rain trailed off and time winded down, Asheville earned a corner and after a Colin Daughtry shot was turned away, Edmondson's follow up squeaked through the traffic to knot the game up at 1-1.

Radford would earn a corner early in overtime, but the Bulldogs cleared the box. In the 97th, the Highlanders earned a free kick just past midfield and Solomon Clark played a ball in where Machado-Jones headed into the back of the net.
