Bulldogs fall in three on the road at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a match in three sets on the road at Winthrop (25-19, 25-14, 25-12) Friday evening in Big South action.
Stat Standouts – The senior duo of Molly Hackett and Peyton McClinton led the Bulldogs on the attack Friday evening as each player totaled six kills. Additionally, both Hackett and McClinton each registered nine digs. Additionally, Ona Elkins was the lone Bulldog to reach double digits in digs finishing with 11.
First Set – Winthrop jumped out to an early lead on Asheville to begin Friday's match. The Eagles scored seven of the first nine points to start the contest to force the Bulldogs to take a timeout to regroup. The timeout seemed to work wonders as Asheville battled back with an 8-2 run to pull in front, forcing Winthrop to call a timeout. Following the early runs by the Eagles and Bulldogs, both teams exchanged leads in the middle stages of the frame. Things were looking good after Asheville's Nina Finderle picked up a kill to give the Bulldogs an 18-17 lead. However, Winthrop had one more run in it, scoring eight of the following nine points to finish off the 25-19 win.
Second Set – After taking the first set, Winthrop used lockdown defense to go up 2-0 on the Bulldogs. The Eagle defense held Asheville to just four kills on 40 attempts in the second. Winthrop, meanwhile, had 18 kills on 52 attacks to fuel all the offense it would need in a 25-14 set victory.
Third Set – Winthrop finished off Friday's match by replicating its 18-kill performance from the second but achieved it more efficiently. The Eagle offense attacked at a match-best .406 clip on 32 tries to finish off the three-match sweep of the Bulldogs, 25-12.
Next Up – The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday when they visit rival Gardner-Webb in another Big South clash. Saturday's matchup of Bulldogs is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
