Volleyball hits the road for matches at Winthrop and Gardner-Webb

10.28.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will head out on the road this weekend as it visits Winthrop on Friday before traveling to Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Friday's contest is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Saturday's is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a close five-set battle (25-6, 20-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-12) to Presbyterian last Saturday at the Justice Center. The Bulldogs are now 4-15 overall and 2-8 in Big South play with Saturday's result.

Fine Month from Finderle – As the month of October comes to a close, a few Bulldogs have had stellar months statistically. Arguably leading this group has been Nina Finderle. Finderle has racked up 35 total blocks (five solo, 30 assists), averaged 1.25 blocks per set, and has attacked at a team-high .388 clip in October.

Cruser Continues to Improve – Much like Finderle, Kat Cruser had a nice month posting 57 kills, a hitting percentage of .260, and 18 total blocks. Furthermore, Cruser set a new career-high with 12 kills in a match earlier this month against Friday's opponent, Winthrop.

It's a Bulldog Block Party – In last Saturday's match against Presbyterian, Asheville broke the school record for blocks in a match with 19. The previous record was 17, set in two separate matches also against the Blue Hose on October 7, 2011, and November 2, 2012.

About the Opponents – The Eagles, who are 11-9 overall and 6-4 in league play, currently sit in fifth place in the Big South standings, but they are just one game out of being in third. Like most teams, Winthrop has been much better at home than on the road, with four of its six conference victories coming in matches played in Rock Hill, S.C.

Gardner-Webb has scuffled a bit recently, losing five of its last six matches. GWU, which is 7-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play, does have the Big South's digs per set leader in Mikah McIntosh. McIntosh's digs per set average sits at 5.12, which ranks 20th nationally.

Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Winthrop has held the edge against Asheville in the all-time series (42-33) and recently won the last three matchups. As for Gardner-Webb, the Bulldogs have won 27 of the 38 meetings, including a 3-0 sweep of the Runnin' Bulldogs earlier this month.
