BUIES CREEK & WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team continued its impressive start to its 2021-22 season by defeating UNC Wilmington (151-148) and Campbell (152-109) on Saturday. With the pair of dual meet victories, the Bulldogs remain unbeaten and improve their record to 5-0.
This 5-0 start by the Bulldogs improves upon a program-best start and boosts Asheville's record in dual meets to 13-1-1 since November 2019. Furthermore, the two wins on Saturday marked the first-ever victories over Campbell and UNC Wilmington in program history.
"We went up against some great competition today, but this is what we've trained for all season, and it paid off," said Mikaela Fullerton afterward. "With the support of our teammates and our own strengths, we took first against both teams. I'm so proud to be a part of this team!"
There were plenty of highlights for the Bulldogs on Saturday, and one of these included a school-record being broken. Freshman Morgan Coughlen set new school and freshman records in the 3-meter diving event finishing her six dives with a point total of 218.25. Coughlen also paced the Bulldogs in 1-meter diving with a point total of 193.13.
In the swimming events, the Bulldogs also had several standout outings that included eight first-place finishes. Delaney Carlton (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle), Nora Segurola Larrinaga (200-yard backstroke), and Fullerton (100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke) all won individual events and then teamed with Abby Parks to take home the top time in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:46.06. Freshman Caitlin Hefner also tallied a pair of event victories (500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle) to provide big point totals for Asheville.
"Our program is so special," Amelia Ham added. "We always show up for each race, and today we did just that. For the first time in program history, we beat Campbell and UNCW, and we couldn't have done it without all of our swimmers and divers. There are great things to come for this team, and I cannot wait to see what happens next."
The Bulldogs will look to keep this sensational start intact next Friday and Saturday when they host CCSA rival, Georgia Southern. The diving portion of the meet will take place on Friday at 3 p.m. from the Jewish Community Center in Asheville, while the swimming portion will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Justice Center Pool. The swimming portion can be seen on ESPN+.
