Swimming & Diving looks to protect its undefeated record this weekend vs. Georgia Southern

10.28.2021 | Women's Swimming & Diving

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving team will look to protect its perfect 5-0 record this weekend when it welcomes conference rival Georgia Southern to Asheville. The meet will open with diving at 4 p.m. on Friday from the Jewish Community Center before wrapping up with the swimming portion at 11 a.m. Saturday morning from the Justice Center Pool. Fans can watch Saturday morning's action on ESPN+

Last Time Out – Asheville picked up victories over Campbell (152-109) and UNC Wilmington (151-148) last Saturday. The two wins not only boosted the Bulldogs' record to 5-0, but they also marked the first time Asheville has knocked off either UNCW or Campbell in program history.

Pride in Perfection – By boosting its record to 5-0 on Saturday, the Bulldogs improved upon their best start in program history. Furthermore, Asheville's five dual meet wins are just one shy of tying the program record of six back in the 2013-14 season.

New Record Holder – A highlight in Asheville's victory over UNC Wilmington was the performance by Morgan Coughlen. Coughlen broke the school and freshman records in the 3-meter diving events, finishing with 218.25 points.

Carlton Continues Strong Start – Junior Delaney Carlton once again played a crucial role in Asheville, coming away with a pair of dual meet wins on Saturday. In addition to a couple of individual event wins (50-yard free, 100-yard free), Carlton's performance as the anchor in the 400-yard freestyle relay was particularly critical in Asheville's win over UNCW's as it clinched the victory for the Bulldogs by .10 seconds.

A Line from Coach Lykins – "The team is eager to compete again this weekend with our swimmers and divers together," said Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "Georgia Southern is a strong conference opponent and we will have to dive well and race hard to finish with a win.  It is our last dual meet of the Fall and we will use it as a tune-up for the mid-season invitational in November."

About Georgia Southern – Georgia Southern downed North Florida earlier this month by a score of 145.5-116.5 in its lone dual meet of the season so far. Overall, the Eagles won 10 of the 14 events against the Ospreys.

Series Rewind vs. GSU – The series between the Bulldogs and Eagles has been competitive, with Georgia Southern holding the slight edge and winning six of the 10 all-time meetings. However, Asheville has gotten the better of GSU lately, winning the last three matchups, including a 274.5-207.5 victory last November in Statesboro.
