BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team kept rolling on Friday as it knocked off Gardner-Webb (189-73) and Bellarmine (201-60) to open its Collegiate Coastal Sports Association (CCSA) schedule. With the pair of victories, the Bulldogs are now off to their best start in program history, beginning the 2021-22 campaign with a 3-0 record.Â
By securing two wins on Friday, the Bulldogs improved to 11-1-1 in dual meets since November 2019.
Asheville was dominant throughout Friday's action. Of the 14 events, the Bulldogs landed first-place finishes in 13 of them, including in both relay events.
"We went into the meet with the mindset that an Asheville cap needs to touch the wall first in as many events as possible," said Delaney Carlton. "We ended up doing that and more, and it was so fun to see everyone fight to the finish in every event. Looking forward to the next few conference matchups next week and the following weekend, and then a great mid-season invite! Go Bulldogs!"
Individually, Kylie Johnson (1000-yard freestyle – 10:54.12), Carlton (200-yard freestyle – 1:55.30, 100-yard freestyle – 52.06), Nora Segurola Larrinaga (100-yard backstroke – 58.13), Mikaela Fullerton (100-yard breaststroke – 1:06.60), Riley Edmundson (200-yard fly – 2:09.29, 400-yard IM – 4:38.16), Abby Parks (50-yard freestyle – 24.11), Grace Adams (200-yard back – 2:07.57), Caitlin Hefner (500-yard free – 5:07.60), and Addison Wright (100-yard fly – 58.34) accounted for the first-place finishes for Asheville. Furthermore, in four different events, the Bulldogs finished first, second, and third.
"Today wouldn't have been possible without my teammates," Gaby Shenot said afterward. "For every single race, I could see them jumping up and cheering me on. Knowing that these ladies are here for me is something that gets me through every single race I swim. Proud to be a Bulldog today!"
Asheville will aim to keep things rolling next Saturday when it takes on UNC Wilmington and Campbell.
