Swimming & Diving opens CCSA play on Friday against Gardner-Webb and Bellarmine

10.14.2021 | Women's Swimming & Diving

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team will begin its Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) schedule on Friday with a Double Dual meet against Gardner-Webb and Bellarmine. Friday's meet, which will be hosted by Gardner-Webb, is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m.

Last Time Out – Asheville kicked off its season with an impressive 174-124 victory over ECU at home on October 1. With that win, the Bulldogs continue their recent success in dual meets as they have posted an 8-1-1 record in duals since November 2019.

Awards Galore – Following the win over the Pirates, Delaney Carlton and Jade Canady were recognized for their performances by being named the CCSA's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. By being named the league's swimmer of the week, Carlton joins Morgan Rulevich as the only Bulldogs to ever claim multiple weekly honors from the CCSA. Canady, meanwhile, made some history, becoming the first Bulldog diver ever to earn this recognition.

Note from Coach – "With the season off to a good start, we are eagerly looking forward to traveling to our closest conference opponent and to be joined by Bellarmine University, the newest member of the CCSA," said Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins ahead of Friday's meet. "We have put in hard work in the pool over the previous weeks and will use this competition against two quality teams to refine new racing strategies and techniques. Go Bulldogs!"

About the Opponents – Like Asheville, Gardner-Webb enters Friday with one meet already under its belt. GWU competed against South Carolina on October 9, with the Gamecocks coming away with the 222-68 win.

Bellarmine, meanwhile, will begin its second season as a Division I program on Friday. The Knights, who were limited to three meets last season because of CoVID-19, have some experienced swimmers returning in the form of seniors Maya Sorenson and Rachel Walker. Sorenson and Walker not only bring experience, but they have also enjoyed stellar collegiate careers as they both are former Division II All-Americans.

Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Asheville has recently gotten the better of Gardner-Webb as it has defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs three straight times. One of those occasions happened two years ago in another home opener for Gardner-Webb. Asheville won the meet on the final event as the 200-yard freestyle relay team of then-freshmen Carlton, Jessie Frank, Bela Stuart, and Nora Segurola Larrinaga clocked in at 1:37.27 to give the Bulldogs the victory.

Additionally, Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between Bellarmine and Asheville.
