CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the UNC Asheville swimming & diving team swept the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) weekly awards. Delaney Carlton was named the league's swimmer of the week, while Jade Canady was tabbed the conference's diver of the week.
"Congratulations to both Jade & Delaney for their performances in the team win over ECU last weekend," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "It's an honor to be recognized by the conference coaches for their successes."
Carlton played a crucial part in Asheville's 174-124 win over ECU last Friday to open their 2021-22 season. She won both the 50-yard freestyle (23.86) and 100-yard freestyle (51.86) against the Pirates. Both of those times are currently the fastest in the CCSA so far this season. Carlton also served as the anchor in Asheville's pair of relay wins (200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle), where she posted split times of 23.33 and 23.45, respectively. Counting her the points individually and the ones from the relay victories, Carlton helped contribute 40 points to the Bulldogs' win over ECU.
Canady, meanwhile, competed in a pair of one-meter diving events in Asheville's season-opening victory over ECU. In the first one, she totaled 184.10 points, which ranked third. Canady boosted her point total to 200.00 in the second event, and that effort landed her a second-place finish. With her efforts and those of her diving teammates, they logged 14 key points to help fuel Asheville's season-opening win.
For Carlton, it marked the second time in her career that she has been named the CCSA Swimmer of the Week, with the last being on October 22, 2020. Furthermore, Canady makes some history as she is the first member of the Bulldog diving team to earn a CCSA Diver of the Week nod.
Carlton, Canady, and the rest of the Bulldogs will return to action on October 15 when they compete in a tri-meet against Gardner-Webb and Bellarmine. This meet, which will take place at Gardner-Webb, is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start time.
