Radford Rebounds to Salvage Split Against Asheville
01.23.2021 | Women's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell on the road to Radford Saturday afternoon by a score of 74-53. The Bulldogs move to 6-7 overall and 5-3 in Big South action with the loss.
Kai Carter led the Bulldogs on the score sheet netting 17 points on a 6-for-14 effort from the field. For Carter, this continues a good stretch of play lately as she has averaged nearly 17 points (16.6) points per game over her last five games. Fellow sophomore Faith Adams also had a solid day establishing a new career-highs in points with 10 and steals with five to go along with five rebounds.
"Unfortunately, we had a poor shooting performance the entire game," head coach Honey Brown said. "Usually, we find a way to get in rhythm, but we couldn't find it today."
A day after Asheville and Radford scored over 80 points each, the offense was a little harder to come by Saturday. The Bulldogs shot around 30 percent from the field in the first two quarters, with the tandem of Carter and Nadiria Evans pacing Asheville's offense with eight and seven points, respectively. Despite efforts from Carter, Evans, and the rest of the Bulldogs, Radford still led by six, 32-26, at the halftime break.
When the second half began, Radford came out with added intensity defensively. The Highlanders held Asheville to 2-for-18 shooting from the floor in the third quarter to grow their lead. After defense dominated the third, Radford's offense started to click in the fourth, going 9-for-11 from the field and 7-for-8 on free throws to expand its lead to as many as 26 points before winning eventually by a score of 74-53.
"Our offensive struggles also affected our defense today, which we have to correct before our next series," Brown added. "Radford has a good team and is well-coached, so I expect them to continue doing well."
As the schedule currently stands, Asheville's next game will be on February 3 when it travels to Presbyterian. This contest was originally supposed to be played on January 4 but was postponed. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Blue Hose is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
