Bulldogs Bounce Back to Knock Off Hampton, 78-69

01.29.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After nearly a month of not playing on its home floor, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team returned to Kimmel Arena Friday evening and defeated Hampton by a score of 78-69. The victory boosts Asheville's overall record back to the .500 mark at 7-7, while improving its record in the Big South to 6-3.

For the ninth time this season, senior Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs on the scoresheet with 16 points. Evans not only scored herself but also set up her teammates as three other players from Asheville finished the night in double figures. Abigail Wilson finished with 15 points, Faith Adams added 12, and Amaryah Corpening chipped in 10. For Wilson and Adams, both point totals set new career-highs for them.

Another big key in Asheville's victory Friday was its effort rebounding. The Bulldogs out rebounded the Lady Pirates 35-27. Asheville, who improves to 5-1 when it wins the rebounding battle, were led on the glass by Kai Carter with 11 rebounds. Wilson and Amanda Blake also grabbed five rebounds each to help the cause.

The opening quarter was a mixed bag for the Bulldogs. On one hand, Asheville shot 50 percent from the field and a total of six different Bulldogs tallied points. However, the Bulldogs turned the ball over eight times in the first 10 minutes, which contributed to Hampton attempting seven more field goals. With the extra chances, the Lady Pirates to put together an 8-0 run to erase an early six-point hole. Corpening connected on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds though to give the Bulldogs a slight 16-14 advantage after one quarter.

Asheville's balanced offense continued in the second quarter as eight different Bulldogs accounted for the team's 18 points. A large chunk of those points came in transition as Asheville outscored the Lady Pirates 9-0 in fast break points. With the transition game working well and less turnovers, the Bulldogs were able to build their lead to seven, 34-27, after two quarters of action.

When the game resumed for the second half, Hampton got into a groove offensively as it nearly matched its first half point total (27) in the third quarter alone by scoring 22. However, the Bulldog offense was even better scoring 27 points to grow its advantage to 61-49 headed to the fourth.

Trailing by 12 points with 10 minutes to go, Hampton did not go quit in the final frame. The Lady Pirates were able to trim the Bulldog lead all the way down to four points with 3:30 to go in regulation. Asheville answered back with a couple key buckets and stops down the stretch to clinch the 78-69 victory.

Asheville and Hampton will match up again on Saturday in the series finale. Saturday's game, which will be sponsored by Pepsi, is set to tip-off at 3 p.m. on ESPN3.
