ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville Athletics is excited to announce the establishment of the Adelyn Deery Women's Golf Endowed Scholarship.
An anonymous donor has generously contributed an initial gift of $100,000, with an additional $200,000 planned gift in the future. The $300,000 total will establish the largest athletic endowed scholarship in the university's history.
"We are so grateful for this gift in honor of one of our exceptional student-athletes, Addy Deery," Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone said. "She has personified what it means to be a Champion and Leader in the classroom, community and the golf course. We are thrilled that her name will continue to be a part of our golf program in the future and so grateful for the support of our anonymous donor in making this possible."
The endowed scholarship is named in honor of Deery, a native of Lancaster, Pa., who will be graduating in May with an undergraduate degree in management as part of the golf program's inaugural graduating class. Deery currently holds a 3.742 grade-point average and just last week was named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team.
Deery recorded 11 Top-25 finishes in her career, including two Top 10 results. She placed eighth at the Pinehurst Women's Invitational in her junior season, helping the Bulldogs win the championship as a team. She also tied for eighth at the F&M Bank Austin Peay Invitational as a sophomore, as the Bulldogs tied for second in the tournament.
During the second round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate in her sophomore season, Deery scored a one-under 71, recording one of the two first sub-par rounds in program history. The following season, she fired a 70 at the Northern Kentucky Invitational – the lowest round in program history.
"As a coach, I can't think of a more deserving member of the UNC Asheville Women's Golf Program to have a scholarship endowed in her name," head coach Ericka Schneider said. "Addy is a true example of what it means to be a Bulldog. She was a captain as a senior and always led by example, being a great student, golfer and member of the community.
"I cannot thank our anonymous donor enough for their support of not only our athletes, but their education. Each athlete who is awarded the Addy Deery scholarship will be someone who exemplifies the qualities that Addy displayed each day as a Bulldog. I cannot wait to see the legacy that follows in Addy's name with this amazing contribution to our program and student-athletes."
